Achievements & Recognition October 2013
Mabel I. Wilson School
One of our goals this year at MIW is to implement a new structure as part of our Response to Intervention (RTI) model. This structure is called Focus Groups. Each grade level has one 30 minute shared block of time each day (four times a week). During this time, students travel to different teachers to receive targeted instruction in a skill that meets their individual needs. Teachers meet regularly in their grade level groups to review assessment information and group students according to their needs.
Every student can benefit from targeted instruction in a specific skill to move them to the next level of achievement. Some groups have 5 students in them while others have 15, depending on the skill being taught. Some potential benefits from this structure include a sense of collective responsibility, meaningful review of assessment data in a collaborative way, and boosting student achievement, just to name a few. We are already impressed with the conversations and student performance that we are seeing.
