December, 2014 MSAD #51 Achievements and Recognition
Mabel I Wilson School
The kindergarten team is gathering all kindergarten students together each Friday morning for a short community meeting. During this time, they greet each other and sing together. The time is brief yet significant in building a strong sense of community for these youngsters.
At MIW, they are continuing to use the labsite model of learning for teachers' professional development. This year, they have added some labsites that are focused specifically on math practices; in past the focus has been all literacy. Teachers are enjoying the time to work together and share ideas while trying strategies in a classroom together.
Greely Middle School 4-5
Fourth and fifth grade students have been busy this past month helping others in the community in a variety of ways:
Mr. Brookes' 5th grade class sponsored a school-wide penny drive. Proceeds will be tallied this week and donated to the Bruce Roberts Toy Fund, an organization that provides holiday presents to the children of needy families in southern Maine. Each classroom attempted to fill at least one large container with pennies. The total collection will be announced at an assembly on Friday, December 19th.
Students also participated in the 9th annual Read-A-Thon which was created
to help students build an awareness of their ability to make a difference in their community. Students collected pledges for the amount of time they have read outside of school. Once collected, the pledges will be tallied and used to support families in our community during this winter season. This support may be in the form of family groceries, winter clothes, fuel assistance or holiday gifts for children. We will also use the funds raised to help send students in the 4th and 5th grade to Summer Recreation Camp. The total collection will be announced at an assembly on Friday, December 19th.
Greely Middle School 6-8
In December, Team Doubletop honored several 8th graders as team students of the week:
Week of 12/1 were Gowan Frost and Maddie Irish
Week of 12/8 were Maggie McCormick and Aidan Hayes
Week of 12/15 were Evelyn Hanley and Dante Gianattasio
These students have demonstrated core values of respectful, responsible, and safe behavior in school.
On Wednesday, December 3rd, Greely Middle School held the first band and chorus concert of the school year. The 6th grade band, 6-8th grade chorus, and 7th and 8th grade band all performed. Our students played beautifully under the direction of Sarah Cummings, Ann Dillon, and Scott Thurston.
Additionally, 23 chorus students recently auditioned for the District 2 Honors Chorus. Of the 23 who auditioned, a record 17 students were accepted. The audition process is rigorous and requires time spent outside of school learning and rehearsing a choral piece. Well done to all of the students who had the courage to audition, and congratulations to the 17 who were accepted.
Greely High School
Two teams competed in the VEX Robotics competition which was held in Augusta on Saturday, December 13th.
On December 11th, the high school held its band concert. The students exhibited incredible musical talent as they played complex pieces under the direction of Mr. Rollins.
Will Silvers has been accepted to the All Eastern Music Festival on tenor sax. This is quite an accomplishment as students from any of the North Eastern States can apply. (Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont) He'll be going to rehearse and perform with this ensemble in Providence, RI next April.
Several of our fall athletes were recognized for their accomplishments:

The Western Maine Board of Approved Soccer Officials recently announced its awards:
Jocelyn Mitiguy with its Outstanding Player/Sportswoman Award. This award is given annually to three female soccer players with the criteria being Sportsmanship, Leadership, Ability and Contribution to Team Success.
Josh Muscadin, Greely Girls Soccer Team Coach, earned the Coaches Award. The Coaches Award is given annually to the coach that '... exhibits the highest ideals of the coaching profession.'
Having two award winners from the same school is unprecedented in the history of this officials board.
And thanks to the Greely PTO who organized the Fill a Bus, Fill A Belly Event. The Transportation Department assisted with providing a bus and removing the seats. Generous members of the Greely Middle School community donated 4,700 pounds of food to the local food pantry. 94 Families will be fed almost a month worth of food!
