Lifeguard Class

Are you interested in training to become an American Red Cross certified Lifeguard?  We are offering three classes during the summer.  Classes will run every two weeks throughout the summer.  The first week will be classes and in water skills.  The second week will be in water practice and the test on Tuesday and Thursday.  

LG Class 1 - June 23-25, Tues-Thurs, 9-3:00, Friday, 9-12:00, June 30 and July 2, 9-12:00

LG Class 2 - July 7-9, Tues-Thurs, 9-3:00, Friday, 9-12:00, July 14 and 16, 9-12:00

LG Class 3 - July 21-23, Tues-Thurs, 9-3, Friday, 9-12:00, July 28 and 30, 9-12:00

Upon successful completion of this course you will receive a two year certification in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED.

The format for this class will be blended learning.  Seven and a half hours will be completed online (completed prior to scheduled class) and the remainder of the class will be at the pool for classroom and in-water sessions Please come to a MANDATORY INFORMATIONAL MEETING* June 3 at 1:20 PM at Greely pool.  Pre-course swim immediately following the meeting.  Bring your suit!  

Pre-course Requirement Swim (must be 15 yrs of age)

1. Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing.

  • Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed.  

  • 2. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.  

  • 3. Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.* Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.  Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.  Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance under water.  Exit the water without using a ladder.

Registration through Cumberland Recreation Department.  Deadline for registering is June 8.  The fee is $250 for C/NY residents and $260 for non-residents and an additional $35 fee for your online registration.  This fee includes access to your online learning and upon successful completion of the course you will receive your certification.

Students cannot miss classes.  There is limited opportunity for make up.

Minimum participants for each class: 4.  Maximum participants for each class: 6.                                       *Parents welcome
