Parenting Anxious Kids: Helping your Worried Child Become More Courageous and Independent
WEDNESDAY, November 18, 6 - 8 pm Prince Memorial Library ______________________________________________________________________
All children experience worry and anxiety as they grow up and up to 20% have a diagnosable anxiety disorder.
Parents often cope with their children’s worry and fear by providing constant reassurance (“There is nothing to worry about, you will do fine on the test” ) and facilitating avoidance of feared situations (“If you are too scared to take the bus, I will drive you to school”) because nothing else seems to work. Yet these comforting responses don’t solve the problem and ultimately impair the development of skills for handling worry and anxiety.
This lecture will teach parents what anxiety is and how it works. It will outline a practical approach for parents to help their children to “move through” their anxiety so that they can become more independent and courageous and ultimately engaged more fully in life.
Dr. Elizabeth Kubik will present and lead a discussion for about 1 hour, followed by ample time for questions and answers.
