Guide to MSAD #51’s Budget Votes and Referendum Questions

In order to pass school budgets in Maine, two citizen votes are required. We hope to clarify the process with the information below.  If you have additional questions, please contact Martha Leggat at mleggat@msad51.org or Susan Conley at sconley@msad51.org.

FIRST VOTE - Budget Passed (see below for June 11 BVR Vote details)

June 6th, 2013 at 7:00 PM

Greely High School Gym

The first vote is the Public Budget Vote. You MUST be present to vote. Registration will begin at 6:30 PM. Once you register, you may not leave and return later. You must be a registered voter. (Citizens can register at the meeting.)

The meeting starts promptly at 7:00 PM. After a presentation of the budget by MSAD #51’s Board of Directors, community members will vote on each Budget Article. The vote on every article will be preceded by an explanation by the moderator. There will then be an opportunity for public questions and comments. Voting on most warrant items will be by a show of hands. Some warrant articles will require voting by paper ballot. In that case, ballot boxes will be available in the gym and the voting will be supervised by ballot clerks.

SECOND VOTE

June 11th, 2013 from 7:00 AM until 8:00 PM

CUMBERLAND: Town Hall, 290 Tuttle Road

NORTH YARMOUTH: Westcustago Hall, 475 Walnut Hill Road

The second vote is the Budget Validation Referendum. State law requires this vote to approve or disapprove the budget acted upon at the June 6th, 2013 District Budget Meeting.  Voting takes place in conjunction with the vote for state and local offices.

Absentee Ballots may be issued for the MSAD #51 Budget Validation Referendum Election at your Town Office.  Ballots may not be received back prior to June 7, 2013 (After the Public Budget vote held at the High School on June 6, 2013).  You may mail your ballot back as long as it is postmarked June 7, 2013, or later, or you may drop it off in person.  There is no in-person Absentee voting after June 7, 2013, unless there are special circumstances as defined by State Statue Title 21-A §753-B.2.

The district web site, www.msad51.org, provides budget details including the budget, cost centers summary, warrant articles, Q&As and presentations from prior School Board meetings.  Please contact the Superintendent’s office at 829-4800, if you have questions or would like information mailed to you.
